Peach Garnets var. Grossular(Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Quebec, Canada) - 2310GG-QC1
44g
5.2 x 2.1 x 3.2cm
Market Rate: $150.00
These garnets come from the permanently closed Jeffrey Mine in Asbestos, Quebec, Canada. Because of the negative press associated with Asbestos, the town has since changed its name to “Val des Sources in 2020 (for those of you who want to do more research on the area).
It was originally an asbestos mine, but when the world demand for asbestos fell quite dramatically in the 1980s (because it causes cancer when inhaled, and fell out of use as a building material), there was less and less desire. In 2001, government subsidies were exhausted, and the mine has been closed ever since. This is why no more new garnets (a happy by-product of mining for asbestos) have emerged from the Jeffrey Mine ever since.
Which is a pity because the finest Grossular Gernets in the world came from the Jeffrey Mine. The crystals are known for their good colour, gorgeous striations, glassy luster and gemminess.
