Dulcote Agate Slice (Dulcote Quarry, St. Cuthbert Out, mendip, Somerset, England, United Kingdom) - 0824_DA1
109x66mm
The agates from Dulcote Quarry are some of the rarest agates in Britain because the quarry was closed many years ago. First discovered in the 17th century, local peasants called them 'potato stones', because the nodules dug up looked like muddy, misshapen potatoes. It was only much later when they were cut up and discovered to have beautiful cores that they were used decoratively. Today, they are called Dulcote Agates orr Potato Agate Stones.
These come in a shades of dark red to this beautiful, pale, plumbed pink. They have beautiful, botryoidal patterns, made by the formation of agates and quartz together.
They are polished on one side - the other side has the cutting marks from the tools used to slice it.
