We’d brought in three Dioptase specimens a few months ago, and they were very quickly snapped up. Because of their popularity, we have sourced for more, but this time, from a slightly better mine.
What do we mean by a “better mine”? Basically, some mines just produce better specimens, with more gemminess or better colours than others. Hopefully, one day, we can get them from the best mine of all – the Tsumeb mine. But those are really expensive and difficult to get our hands on.
But first – what are Dioptase crystals and why are they so highly sought after?
Dioptase is an intense emerald-green to bluish-green copper-based mineral, which puts it under the same category as malachite, shattuckite, chrysocolla, azurite etc. This is also why you often find them growing together in the same mine. However, despite being in the same category as the aforementioned crystals, Dioptase do not form at the same regularity as them.
High-quality dioptase specimens are categorised by the intensity of their green colour and how well-formed the crystals are.
Our Dioptase specimens come from the Tantara mine, which some specimen collectors rank as being second to the famous Tsumeb mine. So, not a bad haul, we think 😁
