Stacked Blue Barite (Unknown Locale) - 0324_B_U1
About this Specimen:
6.2 x 5.2 x 3.1cm
———
Here's a specimen of stacked blue barite tabs. They are a warm, grey-blue, and slightly translucent in parts.
The name "barite" comes from the Greek word barys, meaning "heavy". Despite being a non-metallic mineral, it has an incredibly high specific gravity (4.5), which means it feels much heavier than it looks—often described as feeling "wrong" in the hand because of its density.
Despite its weight, blue barite is soft and brittle, with a hardness of only 3–3.5 on the Mohs scale. It should be handled with care and kept out of direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent fading.
The vibrant blue color in barite is often caused by trace amounts of iron substituting for barium within its crystal lattice.
———
Note: These are real and natural products, and so might have some flaws or imperfections. We have done our best to pick the best pieces available, but nature is often imperfectly perfect. Therefore, please only make the purchase if you are alright with this.
